This week I came across an interesting conceptualisation of the “stages of change” which might be particularly useful if you or someone you care about is in the midst of transition. Perhaps it might shed some light on readiness for change, the kind of support you yourself might need, or could consider offering to your loved one.

According to Prochaska, Norcross and Di Climente*, leading experts and researchers in the process of self-change, there are 6 stages of change, all of which need to be experienced if you want to create lasting, positive change. Research suggests that rushing through or skipping any one of these stages may result in a lower rate of goal success.

Stages of Change:

  1. Precontemplation – this stage may be characterised by a feeling of being stuck but not yet ready to take any steps towards change. Typically, your friends and loved ones may be aware of the need for change but you are unaware or not ready to acknowledge it. You may find yourself in this stage when change is forced upon you, or when it is requested of you.
  2. Contemplation – This is an important period where you are getting ready for change. It involves nutting out the logistics of change, the underlying reasons for it, spending time making observations, and fine tuning your awareness of the issue. Sometimes this can be a lengthy stage and progress can be hard to detect, but it is still an important and productive stage to experience nonetheless.
  3. Preparation – you are now ready for change. This stage includes brainstorming how you are going to create change and laying the foundation to make it possible.
  4. Action – this is the glamorous part of change where you can actually feel yourself taking steps towards your desired outcome. Be prepared to keep working through this phase for some time because your first chosen steps towards change might not result in lasting success, and this is ok! Setbacks are just part of the journey. Take a look at my piece on setbacks to keep you on track and remember to celebrate every small triumph on the way.
  5. Maintenance – in this stage you are just about there but your goal still requires effort and mindfulness to be sustained. Again, be prepared for slips and the need to take renewed action, but know that you are well on your way.
  6. Termination – this is the moment that you can say firmly that you’ve done it, the desired outcome is yours, and there is no chance of backsliding. This is characterised by the change being so well integrated into your life that it naturally happens when you are auto-pilot. Time to celebrate big time!

I wish you the best of luck if you are embarking on your own journey of change or bearing witness to a loved one on their path to change. If I can provide any support or encouragement along the way, please let me know!

Love to all,
