There is much to relish at Christmas time but come January we can wind up feeling sluggish and toxic from indulging in a bit too much fun. These are my top tips for navigating the silly season.
#1: Set an intention for the holiday period. What would you like to achieve? How would you like to feel? Bring mindfulness to your break and use your intention to shape how you spend your precious time. Mine? Simply celebrate family and friends, replenish, and savour the blessings of our Sydney life…
#2: Remember, the choice is yours. Bear in mind the concept of your “present self” and the person you are becoming – your “future self”. Yes, the holiday period is about enjoyment and letting your hair down, but spare a thought for your future self and what will be required of you as a result of the decisions you make now.
#3: Prime yourself for making better decisions by brainstorming in advance some “If X… then Y” statements. Bearing in mind your personal goals, identify events or circumstances that might make it hard to stick to your guns and plan strategies in advance to best deal with it. For example, IF I’m really enjoying the champers at the party, THEN I will alternate between glasses of champagne and glasses of sparkling water.
#4: Be prepared to do things differently. How did you feel last January? Do you want to feel the same way again this January? If the answer is no, what will you do differently over coming weeks?
#5: Observe the simple energy in = energy out principle. I also like cake, roast dinners and champagne, so to minimise the Christmas blowout I observe this simple equation: Energy IN = Energy OUT. Just move more to compensate for your indulgence.
#6: Give yourself a present and nurture your head, heart and body. It will be the gift that keeps on giving. Please give yourself permission to take some time out for you. It is ok to say no where it serves you.
Wishing you a safe, replenishing and joyful Christmas time.
