When in the pursuit of any personally meaningful goal, life will inevitably deal you setbacks.
How can we develop the resilience we need in order to keep things in perspective and to get on with the task in the face of these setbacks?
Seligman’s research on learned optimism shows us the way…
The next time you experience a setback, ask yourself these three questions:
1. Is the setback temporary or will its effect last forever? Generally it is short lived.
2. Is the setback a result of everything you do or just one thing you tried? Generally it is just one or two things, not everything.
3. Are you solely responsible for this setback or were there other factors (such as time, people, and resources) involved? Most often there are other extenuating factors at play beyond your control.
Use these questions to keep a realistic perspective, to stay focused and then get back on track!
