I will never forget this experience: In the grocery store, Charlotte was making life very difficult and a woman in her 50’s caught my eye. I softly said “the joys of shopping with a toddler”. She hissed back at me “I enjoyed every moment with mine”. I wanted the earth to swallow me up and wow, I felt like the worst mother possible. Now who knows what tragedy has struck that poor woman’s life so I wish her peace, but it’s no wonder that it took me so long to accept today’s notion…
Motherhood observation #3: It is ok to acknowledge that there are times when child rearing is a burden, when it’s not fun, when you’d rather be doing something else. This does not make you a bad mother. It does not mean you love your child any less. In my experience, pressure to ‘enjoy everything’ or to suppress honest negative feelings about motherhood only amplifies stress. My guiding principle is to relish the good and make peace with the not so good.

Motherhood observation #2: upholding ‘ideal’ parenting practices can negatively impact on the emotional wellbeing and mental health of mothers. There needs to be a balance struck between the needs of both. Give yourself permission to make choices that sustain your energy, patience and compassion. Parenting is a long game, so carve a path that allows you to keep giving, growing and going!

Come join me on my Facebook blog for a week of daily observations about my personal experience of motherhood.
Day One: I know I post a lot of images of my little girl, capturing many happy moments. This week I’d like to let you in on the whole picture by sharing some observations about my personal experience of motherhood. You might not agree with me, and that is ok! I would absolutely love to hear your insights too.
Motherhood observation #1: It is ok to look forward to kindy days. Why? Because it is ok to crave variation in your daily experience. It is ok to want to express yourself in different ways, with different people. It is ok to have the desire to use your skills, talents and strengths in different environments. It is ok to reclaim the fact that you are an individual, with individual needs, hopes and aspirations, as well as a Mum.
Need some support in reclaiming your sense of identity? I’ve been there too. Drop me a line at suzy@suzyreading.co.uk
