Only talk to yourself as you would your best friend.

This week’s post is short, sweet and hopefully life-changing! We’re all familiar with the saying “you can’t love someone else until you’ve learnt to love yourself”… Just how do we learn to do it? Here is a way: only talk to yourself as you would your best friend:

  • Observe the way you talk to yourself (your inner voice and what you vocalise)
  • Only talk to yourself as you would your best friend
  • When you notice yourself doing anything but talking to yourself as you would your best friend, be gentle, smile, maybe have a laugh, appreciate just how hard this task can be, consciously say “I’m not doing that to myself anymore” and rephrase what you’ve said. Don’t let failure here be yet another thing you berate yourself over. (more…)

What is SELF-CARE?

Self-care can broadly be defined as personal health maintenance undertaken with the intention of improving or restoring health, or treating or preventing disease. I’d like to add the purpose of ‘flourishing’ to this definition and to promote the notion of thinking broader than just nourishing physical health.

When we think about practices to sustain good health and wellbeing, the most common themes are good nutrition, exercise, relaxation, sleep, hygiene, minimizing health hazards like caffeine, alcohol, and all of these are valuable, helpful elements to consider. Your daily yoga practice in just 7 minutes!

Spend just 7 minutes a day to come home to your body, your mind and your calm abiding centre.

Your practice best serves you when it is a constant in your life. For the most profound effects, don’t treat your yoga as a medicine you turn to just in times of stress, or ill health – it is the tonic that best sustains us every day of our lives.

In order to make this possible let go of the idea that you must roll out your mat and be on it for at least an hour. If you have the time and the inclination then by all means do!

Consider committing to a simple 7 minute practice that you can fit into any part of your day where you have the spaciousness to plug into your body, your mind and your breath. (more…)
